History

Hunterdon County was established in 1714 and is located on the western edge of New Jersey. The county seat is Flemington. Flemington is famous for the Lindbergh kidnapping trial of Bruno Hauptmann. The First Courthouse and Jail for the County, built about 1720, was located in the center of Trenton. The governing body met once a year and transacted business in the Courthouse in Trenton. The historic Courthouse burned and was rebuilt on the same site in 1828, using some of the stone from the original building for the Jail portion at the rear of the Courthouse. The Union Hotel is listed on the New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places.
