Hunterdon
County is hilly and the ground rises up slowly from the Delaware
River. It has growing towns and relaxing rural areas. Places of
interest include Hunterdon County Arboretum, Solitude House Museum
and The Red Mill in Clinton New Jersey.
Point
Mountain
Point Mountain is part of the Musconetcong Mountain Range. The
name Point Mountain refers to the prominent crest that this property
displays. The County Parks Department acquired the first tract
of land in 1995. Today, the park contains over 700 acres of prime
forest, fields, streams and geological wonders.
Penwell
Mill
Penwell Mill was named after Judge David P. Shrope’s Mother,
a descendant of the Penns of Pennsylvania. Judge Shrope constructed
a stone house and barn in the 1830’s. The barn was constructed
with fine rubble and masonry. Brick “loop” ventilators
were incorporated into the structure that permitted air flow for
drying hay and other products.
The
Teetertown Ravine Nature Preserve
The Teetertown Ravine Nature Preserve’s 147 acres were acquired
to protect one of the most significant natural areas in Hunterdon
County. Mountain Farm has large fields and two ponds. Crystal
Springs is an important source of water for New Jersey. Its 5
ponds represent the headwaters of the Spruce Run Creek, and is
one of the primary sources for the reservoir of the same name.
Tower
Hill
Tower Hill is 216 acres of meadows and wetlands. The farmhouse
was built by Conrad Wene in 1848. Three generations of the Wene
family lived here until 1914. In 1983 the farm was sold to the
County of Hunterdon.
Charlestown
Reserve
This reserve was originally owned by Charles Hovies. In 1943,
he established a tree farm on the property. In 1981 203 acres
of the farm were sold to the county. Serving as an island of green
in the area north of I-78, the land has been held in trust as
a conservation area.
Union
Furnace Nature Preserve
This 97 acre nature preserve is located in Union Township. It
was named after and listed on the historic register for the colonial
ironworks that flourished here from 1742-1781. The County acquired
the property in 1980.
Jugtown
Mountain
This 237 acre nature preserve is located on the peak of the Musconetcong
Mountain near West Portal.
Sourland
Mountain Nature Preserve
The park’s 273 acres is made up of a deciduous forest with
a swamp surrounded by two streams. This area was known as Pero
Hill and was valued by commercial industries for its large boulders
composed of gray diabase.
Cushetunk
Mountain Nature Reserve
Cushetunk is part of a ring of mountains in Clinton Township that
were formed by volcanic activity during the Triassic Period over
160 million years ago.
Schick
Reserve
The reserve is 311 acres of gently rolling hills with a mixture
of fallow fields, hedge-rows, and woodlands. The reserve was acquired
by the County in 1994.
Hoffman
Park
This 353 acre park is comprised of hardwood forest, grasslands,
and 32 ponds of various sizes.
Uplands
Nature Reserve
The park has a total of 101 acres and reaches 500 feet in elevation.
The reserve consists of steep slopes, open fields, and hardwood
forests. The Walnut Brook meanders through the property.
Musconetcong
Gorge
The Musconetcong Gorge encompasses 425 acres. Originally, this
land was owned by the Warren Glenn Paper Mill. The mill started
production in 1873 and is still in operation today as Fibermark
Inc.
